100727 – Khaleej Times – Campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer

The Rotarian community in Bahrain has planned a series of activities to create awareness about breast cancer after a recent increase in the number of cases in the kingdom.
The activities, primarily targeting women, come at a time when the health authorities are trying to encounter disease. Recently, a 19-year-old girl has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

She is the youngest person in the kingdom to have fallen victim to the disease.

“We need to create awareness in the local community and bring about a change in the perception of people who think breast self-examination is inappropriate or even consider it a taboo,” Mahmood Al Yousif, President of Rotary Club of Adliya, told the press.

The Rotary Club of Adliya has approved its first activity of the Rotary Year — RCA Breast Cancer Awareness Walkathon that will take place on October 1 in association with Think Pink Bahrain, a campaign calling for regular breast self-examination.

Al Yousif said the aim was to raise awareness about breast cancer in Bahrain and encourage women about breast self-examination and seek medical attention if required.

Funds raised through the walkathon will be used for Rotary Club’s ‘Gift of Life Bahrain’ programme to help children with congenital heart defects and Think Pink Bahrain.
