Ethnomusicology

On Monday 11 April 2011, the Rotary Club of Adliya was thrilled to welcome Mr. Hasan Hujairi who talked about his doctoral thesis in Ethnomusicology and his experience to pursuing studies in Bahrain, Japan and lately the United Kingdom.

Hasan Hujairi feels that making music is similar to writing a story; his tale is one with many chapters. He has studied classical guitar in Bahrain and the United States, and learned the floating-bridge oud under Iraqi virtuoso Saad Mahmoud Jawad. A coveted scholarship from the Japanese government led him to delve into the Maritime History of the Gulf, while interning at Tokyo recording studios and playing at spots like the Imperial Hotel and NHK Broadcasting Museum. Hasan was a participant in the 2010 Red Bull Music Academy and is currently a PhD student at the University of Exeter in the field of Ethnomusicology. His last album (‘Manama and Other Spices’) incorporates field recordings made on cassette recorders – spiced up with tube effects. Hasan is an active sound artist and has presented some of his works in art spaces in Bahrain and the UK.

We look forward to your joining us.

17th RCA Model United Nations deferred

Due to the current political situation in Bahrain, the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Adliya has decided to defer the RCA BahMUN XVII. A new date shall be announced after appropriate consultations are made. It is hoped that a new date can be set for May or June 2011.

The Board wishes to thank everyone for their continued support and efforts in regards to the MUN. Currently all registered schools, directors and candidates have been informed of this decision.

Please note that the Rotary Club of Adliya shall be happy to refund any registration monies paid for this event, or, should the participant wishes to await the new date, the Club can withhold the funds and consider the registration current for the new dates to be announced soon.

Please contact your director for more information.

RCA conducts BahMUN XVII training

The organising committee of the 17th RCA Bahrain Model United Nations conducted a short training seminar for the selected chairpersons and secretary general on March 5th at the auditorium in Al-Raja School.

The workshop was led by President Mahmood Al-Yousif, Rotarian Khulood Al-Qattan and Rotarian Fareed Bushehri whose presentation about the challenges of the Millenium Development Goals was well received.

The participants were also informed of several house-keeping issues by the assigned event coordinator Ms. Lorraine Fernandez.

Over BD3,500 raised at the Charity Cricket Tournament

The RCA Charity Cricket Tournament was a success, thanks to the efforts of the organising committee comprised of PP Hasan Balooshi, Rotarian Zoher Taherbhai and Mr. P. K. Ravi.

All the teams thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the competition. Their participation and the perseverance of the organising committee managed to raise over BD3,500 with net proceeds in excess of BD2,000 which shall of course be dedicated to the club’s charitable causes.

We would like to once again thank every participant, spectator and of course the generous donations of individuals and companies without whom none of this could have happened.
