Welcome to the Seventeenth Rotary Club of Adliya Bahrain Model United Nations.

The Rotary Club of Adliya is organising the 17th RCA Bahrain Model United Nations on 12th and 13th April 2012. It is expected that more than 250 students from various schools in Bahrain will participate in this Model United Nations.

The purpose of the Model UN is to provide an interactive educational experience that teaches in an interesting and enjoyable way about the United Nations. The process affords participants an understanding of how the process of international debate and negotiation that we commonly call diplomacy functions. The simulation of the diplomatic processes are especially important in this post-Cold War period when the world is quickly becoming more interdependent. In this interdependent world, Model UN makes for informed global citizens who not only understand the decisions their nation makes but also how those changes effect politics nationally, regionally, and globally.

Background

In late 1994, the Rotary Club of Adliya, District 2450, met to consider how their branch of Rotary International might best honour the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. One of the proposed ideas was to host a Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) which would bring high school students together to debate contemporary world issues. The task appeared daunting as nothing of this sort had been held in Bahrain before. But armed with enthusiasm and dedication to see this project succeed, Rotary Club of Adliya members and school directors set to work – the result in April 1995 was Bahrain’s first Model United Nations. Held under the patronage of the Ministry of Education, 45 delegates met to discuss the Question of Aids and the Question of the Storage and Disposal of Toxic Waste.
