What Rotarians get out of Rotary depends largely on what they put into it. Many membership requirements are designed to help club members more fully participate in and enjoy their Rotary experience.
The Rotary motto Service Above Self conveys the humanitarian spirit of the organization’s more than 1.2 million members. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide.
The Rotary Club of Adliya firmly subscribes to the Rotary ideals, and has diligently worked since inception in 1994 at serving the local and international communities. These efforts include holding the renowned annual Model United Nation Assembly for Youth; assisting the Ministry of Labour of the Kingdom of Bahrain in establishing Career Expo – a career Fair for Young Job Seekers; organizing outings and activities for the elderly and less privileged families; arranging events where the funds raised were donated in support of variety of social humanitarian projects; raising BD 40,000 (US$ 105,820) from the annual Bahrain Golf Invitational that was donated to Al Wafa Center for Autism, a project initiated and developed by the Club; raising funds for the purchase of various medical equipment and the highly successful Earth Day Art Competition through which BD20,000 (US$52,910) was donated to the Ministry of Social Development toward its building an art workshop for persons of special needs. Some of those paintings created at the Competition might still be available for sale on the initiative’s website, please visit and see if you wish to acquire some. The proceeds of their sales will go toward the various club activities and endeavours within the community.
As a new member, you’ll get a chance to become more involved in your community and to provide aid to other parts of the world through the opportunities that your Rotary club and Rotary International offer.
Longtime Rotarians agree that involvement is key to getting the most out of membership. Volunteer to serve on a committee that meets your interests, to be a greeter for weekly club meetings, or to join a service project team. These activities will help you get to know your fellow club members and better understand the work of Rotary.
Attendance
The Rotary Club of Adliya meets every week on Monday evening from 6PM – 7.30PM in the Pearl Restaurant at the Marina Club in Manama. Attending weekly club meetings allows members to enjoy fellowship, enrich their professional and personal knowledge, and meet other business leaders in their community.
Members are required to pay BD7.500 (US$20) at every weekly meeting and the same amount for any guests they invite. It is also the custom of the club to “fine” attendees to the tune of BD1 or however much a person wishes to contribute. These “fines” go toward Club activities and programs.
If members miss a meeting of their own club, they’re encouraged to expand their Rotary horizons by attending a meeting of any other Rotary club in the world.
Service
By participating in local and international service projects, club members can volunteer their time and talents where they’re most needed.
The four Avenues of Service are Rotary’s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:
- Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the club’s effective functioning.
- Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards.
- Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.
- International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace.
Dues
Club members are required to pay annual dues to their clubs, districts, and Rotary International, as well as the subscription fee to the appropriate Rotary magazine. Membership dues at the Rotary Club of Adliya are BD80 annually. Club members are also encouraged to contribute toward the following Rotary programs:
- EREY – Every Rotarian Every Year: BD40 (US$100)
- PHF – Paul Harris Fellowship: BD380 (US$1,000)
Leadership
Club members are encouraged to volunteer for leadership roles at the club level and beyond. To learn more about leadership opportunities in your district, see the district leadership seminar page and the club committees page.
