Vocational & Member Appreciation Evening at the RCA

LIFE EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD OF VEHICLES MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE

During our meeting for Monday 12th July 2010 in our new meeting location and in the first of the monthly Vocational Appreciation evenings at the Rotary Club of Adliya, we will be listening to the experiences of a company fleet manager and how the application of vocational training helped him achieve various successes in his field.

We will be joining Mahmood Fadhel on a journey spanning 35 years where he ended up managing Batelco’s 650+ vehicle fleet, and what he needed to do as far as vocational education is concerned to allow him to excel in this field.

SPECIAL MEMBER APPRECIATION

In another first, we will be appreciating one of our members for their exemplary service to the community through the Rotary Club of Adliya over a period of number of years. This will be another regular feature at the club in 2010/2011.

Exercising while seated

No one can deny the good regular exercise does to people, but the demands of work sometimes stands in the way of going to the gym or participating in other sports which might lead people to a state of unhealthyness.

Well, Dr. Samia Al-Qattan, our guest speaker of the evening demonstrated how even in this situation and with little space and time, people can and should exercise while sitting in their chairs!

Dr. Samia and her assistant Sayed Hussain got all attendees to do just that and through simple exercises, showed how fun they could be too. Unfortunately as the podcast is audio-based, you won’t be able to see the exercises (you might hear some groans though!) but if you visit our Rotary Flickr Stream, you will see some of us participating.

The Incoming District Governor, Nijad Al-Atassi then took the mic and shared with us his quite extensive presentation which he used during the recent training seminars in Egypt – available here for you to download – introduced the Incoming Rotary International President to us and inspired us with a touching song by Declan Galbraith to end the evening on a very good note.

Please enjoy the much shorter Podcast (I edited out most of the groans!) and also view and enjoy Declan’s rather touching song too.

Last night was the first regular club meeting after the traditional summer break the club takes in August. The meeting was certainly abuzz with the excitement of seeing everyone again; fellowship, of course, is on of the main tenets of Rotary life.

We were also fortunate to welcome two guests and a visiting Rotarian.

There was no scheduled speaker for the meeting last night, but I was asked to introduce our various online activities to those present, an activity I welcomed of course, and introduced this website, the EarthDayBahrain.org and its shop which is more than ready to display the fantastic creations of children and professional artists who donated their time and effort during last year’s major charity activity. A lot of those paintings are available for sale, the prices are mentioned on the site, so please take the time to visit and buy a painting or two to help our club help our community.

Another activity that I featured last night was of course our Flickr album which houses many photographs of members and our activities. If you have a Flickr account (it’s free, and Flickr gives you the opportunity to even upload up to 200 pictures of your own in that account) you can create your own virtual album of your favourite pictures not only from our section, but from any other source on the service.

Let me now leave you with the recording of last night’s session which you are more than welcome to download and listen to at your leisure, or indeed click the play button below to listen to it online.
